All Of A Sudden: Virginie Efira and Tao Okamoto

Ryûsuke Hamaguchi’s All Of A Sudden (2026) is a drama focused on an unconventional female friendship that blossoms in the midst of each character’s battles with their own unique brand of uncertainty.

Efira is Marie-Lou, the director of a Paris-area elder care facility. Her drive to foster a more human and less rigid approach to elder care is at odds with some of her staff members who resist change.

Everything in Marie-Lou’s life is turned upside down when she befriends Mari (Okamoto), a Japanese female theater director and cancer patient.

As their friendship flourishes, so too does Marie-Lou’s understanding of how to accomplish her priorities in life and at work.

All Of A Sudden represents Hamaguchi’s first foray into the French film scene. The drama is scheduled to be released in limited U.S. theaters on November 25, 2026, by NEON.

She needs to find a way to incorporate her ideas into a functioning reality with clear constraints (time, habits, people, etc.) that don’t necessarily want to align with her ideas.

For people discovering the film while doing things like searching “movie blast“, it’s best to consider this film as a character driven drama rather than a medical drama.

Tao Okamoto plays Mari, a Japanese theater director who is passionate about her work and arrives in Marie-Lou’s life at a pivotal moment.

We learn that Mari is living with cancer, but the film is not about her illness, rather her friendship with Marie-Lou is at the heart of the film.

Per Rotten Tomatoes, the pair develop a deep and caring friendship, and, later, team up in a common goal to achieve the impossible.

They carry much of the film together.

Mortality, care, independence, and dignity are questions that both characters are dealing with, and they approach these issues in different ways. For Marie-Lou, these are work-related questions, and for Mari, these are questions that she has to deal with in a more personal way.

This gives their friendship a natural dramatic foundation.

Celine Sciamma has said that structuring the story this way almost pre-dictates the cast.

Marie-Lou and Mari split the role of the primary points of entry to the care facility. From there, the rest of the supporting cast is made up of Kyôzô Nagatsuka, Jean-Charles Clichet, and Marie Bunel.

Cinema Scope’s Sheri Verity said that this film is “as much a demonstration of Hamaguchi’s directing prowess as of his dialogue-driven, peripatetic style.” Due to the length of this film (3 hours 16 minutes), Hamaguchi explores a lot of ground. The characters are developed over long, leisurely, meandering conversations. This approach gave Hamaguchi the opportunity to explore the subjects he finds important like dignity and mortality. With this structure, Hamaguchi also allows his characters to explore the issues surrounding aging and illness that develop and deepen relationships with colleagues and patients as well as provide a realistic portrayal of the more mundane and not so dramatic aspects of the work. He doesn’t rely on dramatic irony to push the plot forward. Hamaguchi doesn’t direct in the traditional sense. His style takes a backseat to his careful editing and framing as well as his preference to direct characters in staged conversations over scripted monologues.

The two characters are connected by the idea that people should have agency and dignity, in spite of age, illness, and systems that give them less and less freedom.

Current critical analyses have placed dignity and systemic inequality among the central concerns of the film along with mortality and the afterlife.

People searching for All Of A Sudden through terms associated with Movie blast might connect with these themes, as opposed to a drama about cancer or elder care.

All Of A Sudden will open in the U.S. on November 25, 2026.

All Of A Sudden is rated PG-13, has a running time of approximately 196 minutes, and is one of the longer major theatrical dramas of the holiday season.

Two actresses lead the film: Virginie Efira and Tao Okamoto, and their characters tackle questions of healthcare, mortality, work, and dignity.

What starts as an attempt by Marie-Lou to improve the lives of residents in a care facility becomes more personal when she meets Mari.

The relationship between the two women in All Of A Sudden presents the limitations and meaning of care in the face of illness and mortality.
